How to deposit: five steps and three reasons a payment fails

By Kristaps Birznieks · updated October 2026

Depositing is simple once you know the order of steps and where things can go wrong. Below is a typical process. Every cashier looks a little different, but the logic is the same.

The set of methods and limits depend on the account and the operator — check the cashier to see what your account actually offers.

Five steps

  1. Check the operator. Before the first deposit, find the company behind the site in the licence register of the regulator responsible for your country and compare the name with the site's terms. In Latvia, for example, that is the VID list of licensed gambling organisers.
  2. Set a limit. In the account settings, set a daily, weekly or monthly deposit limit. Lowering a limit usually applies immediately; raising it applies after a delay.
  3. Choose a method. Pick a card, pay by bank, a bank transfer or an e-wallet. Choose the method you want your withdrawals to go back to, because payouts normally follow the same route.
  4. Decide about the bonus. If the cashier shows a bonus tick box, decide before paying. For live table players a bonus is often not worth it — see wagering requirements.
  5. Approve the payment. For pay by bank, approve it in your online bank; for a card, confirm with 3-D Secure in your banking app or with a code.

Why a payment fails

Bank or card limit. Your card may have a daily limit for online payments. Check it in online banking.

Name mismatch. If the casino account is in one name and the card or bank account in another, the payment may be declined or cause problems at withdrawal. Only use your own methods.

Restrictions on gambling transactions. Some banks let customers block certain categories of transactions themselves. If you have switched this on, the payment will fail — and that is the point of the setting.

If the money does not appear

Card and pay-by-bank payments are normally credited quickly. If the balance has not changed, first check in your bank whether the payment was approved, not just started. Then contact the operator's support with the date, amount and, if possible, the payment ID. A bank transfer with payment details takes longer, and entering the reference exactly as shown is essential.

How much to deposit

Deposit only what you are prepared to lose, and do it before the session rather than during it. If you play live tables, consider the table minimum: at a table with a high minimum, a small deposit will not last long. Table rules are covered in our live casino guide; the methods on Visa, Mastercard and pay by bank. How to get money back out is on withdrawals.

A note on e-wallets and vouchers

If you deposit with an e-wallet such as Skrill or a prepaid voucher such as paysafecard, read the bonus terms first: some offers exclude deposits made with these methods. A voucher also usually cannot receive withdrawals, so you will need a second method later. Both are explained on their own pages in this section.

Frequently asked questions

Which deposit method is the fastest?
Usually cards and pay by bank, because the payment is approved immediately. What is available is shown in the cashier.
Can I deposit with someone else's card?
No. Only use methods in your own name; otherwise the payment may be declined and withdrawals blocked.
What if my deposit has not arrived?
Check that the payment was approved in your bank, then send support the date, amount and payment ID.
Can I change my deposit limit?
Yes. Lowering it usually applies immediately; raising it applies after a delay set by the operator.
Can I deposit in the middle of a live session?
Technically yes, but it is the worst moment for a money decision. Deposit before the session and stop when that budget is gone.
